  • * CPS (Cyber Physical System)
CPS is a system that creates added value by collecting data in the real (physical) world, analyzing the data with digital technology or transforming them into usable information and knowledge in the cyber world, and providing feedback to the real world.

Train systems supplied to railway transport and business operations are used for 20 to 30 years or more.
In some cases, train systems no longer used in Japan are exported to Southeast Asia or South America where they continue to be used.

We provide customers with after-sales service so that their train systems can operate safely and securely.
We resolve issues by forecasting the deterioration of parts over time and deploying technologies for improving efficiency, optimization, and reducing energy consumption.

[Image] Years in service and the performance level of train systems
  • * This chart shows the correlation between years in service and performance level of train systems in cases with/without proper maintenance.
The actual situation may differ depending on the maintenance management conditions or the method of preventive maintenance/renewal.

We perform preventive maintenance in a timely fashion to recover the original performance of deteriorated electrical equipment used for train systems.
As an option of preventive maintenance for the renewal of existing equipment, we may add new functions or replace used parts with brand-new ones incorporating the latest technologies.

Product Introduction

Toshiba manufactures products and systems and delivers them to railway transport business operators for their newly built or refurbished railway vehicles.
We mainly offer products and maintenance service for train systems.

Maintenance

Railway transport business operators conduct thorough examination and repair work on the equipment and devices, as well as the parts/components incorporated in them, in accordance with the pertinent laws and regulations.

Repair

We examine and diagnose failed devices or parts at railway transport business operators and repair them if requested to do so. We reflect the data on examination and repair of failed products in preventive maintenance and make a proposal to the railway transport business operator, if necessary.

Maintenance Planning Support

In order to offer proposals, we compile a list of nondurable parts in advance so that we can replace the parts in accordance with the maintenance cycle of railway transport business operators. This is done during the period from the introduction of devices until their renewal or disposal.

Deterioration Diagnosis

We inspect the train systems before preventive and maintenance planning support and check the status of their electrical parts.

Proposals

We propose and determine the final preventive maintenance options to railway transport business operators based on the deterioration survey, taking into considering the condition of deterioration, the status of failure, and the number of operating years.

Renewal

As an option of preventive maintenance, we may add new functions to the failed devices or parts or replace them with new ones incorporating the latest technologies.

Preventive Maintenance

The lifetime of railway systems is rather long and so the incorporated electrical devices and parts are used in most cases for a period of twenty years or more.
Nevertheless, the electrical/electronic parts used in the electrical devices mounted on train vehicles typically have an expected life of fifteen to twenty years. Therefore, such electrical/electronical parts need to be replaced prior to deterioration in order to extend the life of the electrical devices and help maintain safe and stable operation of train systems.
We propose preventive maintenance involving repair and/or replacement of the electrical/electronic parts to Japan Railway companies, other public and private railway companies in Japan, and overseas railway transport business operators.

Research and Development

We aim to offer products and services for the next generation that meet market needs. To accomplish this, we accord priority to the following two major approaches:

  • 1) Anticipating the future market needs through our own efforts and developing the products and services for the next generation
  • 2) Directly listening to railway transport business operators to identify their needs and concerns, and developing tailor-made products and services for the next generation.

Design

We design electrical circuits, including design to cope with changes or obsolescence of parts so that the electrical devices for railway vehicles may recover their original performance. We also design the architecture and/or software of the electrical devices, if necessary.

Procurement

We procure the parts and components necessary for manufacturing products.

Production

We manufacture products or make necessary engineering changes to them.

Testing and verification

We test and verify the products by checking whether they have the required specifications and functions.
